Flower History

Lignum Vitae — "wood of life" — produces one of the hardest, densest woods in the world. Its blue-violet flowers bloom for centuries; the tree can live more than 1,000 years. Its resin was historically used as a treatment for syphilis. Today it is endangered due to over-logging across the Caribbean. Jamaica's coat of arms depicts the tree, making its conservation a matter of national identity.
