Flower History

The cantuta, called "the sacred flower of the Incas," was considered divine by the Tahuantinsuyo. Its tubular red, yellow, and white flowers represent the colours of the wiphala, the Andean flag. It grows in inter-Andean valleys between 2,500 and 3,800 metres altitude. Due to habitat loss and agricultural encroachment, it is now classified as vulnerable by the IUCN.
