Flower History

According to legend, Norse invaders attempting a night attack on a Scottish camp stepped barefoot on thistles; their cries woke the defenders. The thistle became a symbol of resilience. It appears on Scottish currency and in the Order of the Thistle, Scotland's highest honour. The species recorded in heraldry is Onopordum acanthium, though some historians argue the original was Cirsium vulgare.
